Fatty Liver Disease (Hepatic Steatosis)
- Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD): This occurs when fat builds up in the liver of people who drink little or no alcohol. It is often linked to obesity, diabetes, and high cholesterol.
- Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (AFLD): Caused by excessive alcohol consumption, this condition can lead to inflammation and damage to liver cells.
Hepatitis
- Hepatitis: A viral infection that causes liver inflammation, often spread through contaminated food and water. It usually resolves on its own.
- Hepatitis B: A more serious viral infection that can be acute or chronic. It’s spread through contact with infected body fluids (blood, sexual contact, etc.).
- Hepatitis C: Another viral infection that is usually spread through blood-to-blood contact. It can lead to chronic liver disease and cirrhosis if left untreated.
- Hepatitis D: This only occurs in people who are already infected with hepatitis B.
- Hepatitis E: Transmitted through contaminated water, hepatitis E usually causes acute liver disease.
Cirrhosis
Cirrhosis is the severe scarring of the liver caused by long-term liver damage. It is often the result of chronic hepatitis, alcohol abuse, or fatty liver disease. As the liver becomes scarred, it loses its ability to function properly, which can lead to liver failure.
Liver Fibrosis
This is the buildup of scar tissue in the liver. It is an early stage of liver damage that can progress to cirrhosis if untreated. It is commonly caused by chronic inflammation from conditions like hepatitis or fatty liver disease.
Liver Cancer
- Primary Liver Cancer: Includes hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which starts in the liver cells, and cholangiocarcinoma, which starts in the bile ducts.
- Secondary Liver Cancer: Cancer that spreads to the liver from another part of the body, such as the colon, breast, or lungs.
Autoimmune Hepatitis
This occurs when the body’s immune system attacks the liver cells, causing inflammation. If untreated, it can lead to cirrhosis and liver failure.
Hemochromatosis
Hemochromatosis is a genetic condition where the body absorbs too much iron from food. The excess iron can build up in the liver and other organs, leading to liver damage and conditions like cirrhosis or liver cancer.
